Advancing your career: ROS Skill-Building course as part of our Career Services

Providing our M.Sc. Robotic Systems Engineering students with real-world ROS experience.

Last week, we were excited to offer our M.Sc. Robotic Systems Engineering students the opportunity to participate in an exclusive one-week Skill-Building Course on ROS – Robot Operating System.

As part of our new career program, this course was a great way for our students to sharpen their profile and enhance their skills in programming cobots using the ROS framework. The course came to be in cooperation with RWTH Aachen’s IGMR, co-creating and teaching the course, and Universal Robots, who provided the cobots the students worked on during the week.

Welcome to the world of ROS!

The first two days of the week were dedicated to the theoretical aspects. The participants learned the basic functionalities of the ROS file structure, communication, services and actions.

The students then worked together with experts on welding ROS projects to apply their newly acquired skills, learning how to create, organize and manage ROS packages, which are the basic unit of software in ROS, and understanding the concept of nodes and their role in ROS.

In small groups, they applied these concepts to build and control a robot using ROS, including robot modeling, control and navigation. On the last day, the projects were presented to the professors of the IGMR.

Universal Robots as a strong cooperation partner

As a strong partner, Universal Robots provides technical equipment as well as helpful expertise – and also accompanied the course for one day. Thank you, Jan Winter, for sharing your insights and making the time to accompany the course!

IGMR - Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics

The M.Sc. Robotic Systems Engineering is directed by the Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics (IGMR) of RWTH Aachen University. In teaching and research, the IGMR focuses on mechanism theory and kinematics, machine dynamics and vibration engineering, and robotics and mechatronics.

By applying their expertise in mechanics, electrical drives, sensor technology and information processing, they develop robotic systems that help shape the digital transformation of industry and society.

We would like to thank everyone at IGMR for co-creating, supporting, teaching and accompanying this Skill Building Course:

Markus Schmitz, Stefan-Octavian Bezrucav, Daniel Gossen, Sophie-Charlotte Keunecke, Stefan Ruland, Kunkuma Venkatesan, Robin Heitz, Florian Menz, Hendrik Nessau, Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Burkhard Corves and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mathias Hüsing.

Empowering your career: Skill development for success

Academic excellence alone is not enough to stand out in today's competitive job market. That's why the Career Service of the RWTH International Academy presents goal-oriented offers and trainings bespoke to the students’ respective study phase, all of which are integrated into a structured career program.

Starting from the first day of their studies, our Career Service provides opportunities for skills development, sharpening their profile and preparing students for job re-entry.

How it works: Customized workshops & real-world simulations

With specialized skill-building courses that complement the students' curriculum, our courses are designed to teach skills currently in demand across industries.

Theory is important, but so is hands-on experience. Our skill-building courses provide the opportunity to apply the newly acquired skills in a controlled environment, gaining real-world experience and boosting the students’ career competences.

To provide valuable insight and practical knowledge, we invite industry experts and professionals for lectures and interactive sessions. As formal proof of the additionally acquired skills, we offer certifications which can serve as valuable additions to the students’ resume and demonstrate their extra-curricular commitment.

Our students’ success is our mission, and we are committed to fostering their potential and empower them to become the best version of themselves in the professional world.

Thank you all for attending our ROS Skill-Building Course – see you at our next event!
