The standard German language program for international master students takes two semesters (A1 – A2 level). Students attend the German courses (A1 level) in September and in the winter semester and complete the program in the subsequent summer with a A2-level by passing the German Language Exam for Master Students (DSM). If students start with previous knowledge of German, the program starts in October at the earliest and is shortened accordingly.
Intensive Phase: 4 - 22 September 2017 (Only for Students without previous knowledge)
The DSM examination includes an oral skills component and evaluates students’ reading, writing and comprehension skills in areas particularly relevant to their course of study and careers. Students who pass the DSM examination also have the possibility of attending further German language courses at the RWTH Language Center.
If students have previous German language knowledge starting with a higher level than A1, the duration of instruction is shortened accordingly. Please note that student with previous knowledge must to a placement test at the RWTH Language Center to confirm they knowledge level. The placement test will be held in early October, please check the Language Center's website here for an update of the exact date.
There is no September intensive phase for students with previous knowledge.
You can only start a German language course in October if you have achieved at least A1.2 level as a result of the RWTH Language Center’s placement test in early October. We therefore highly recommend that you make arrangements to arrive in time to begin the A1.1 intensive course in September unless you are absolutely certain that you will have A1.2 level. Information regarding enrolment procedures and placement tests for late-arrivers will be provided via email.
