In this digital Summer School, you explore the fundamentals of automotive engineering, mobile propulsion and modern automotive technologies. You debate alternative and electrified vehicle propulsion systems, examine automated driving and work on a case study. You even get to meet a student formula team. They present their work on self-built race cars with alternative propulsion systems to you.

Program Outline | Online Course

In the Online Course on Automotive and Mobility Studies, you explore modern automotive technologies and concepts of mobility: You learn about the vehicle in the context of history and environment, driving resistances, brake systems and longitudinal dynamics as a whole.

You study different principles of energy conversion and requirements on combustion engines, alternative vehicle propulsion systems and fuels. The technical basics of automated driving are considered in their legal, social and economic context, including a case study.

Academic Staff | Summer School 2021

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) and the Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA) conduct the academic content.

Research areas include innovative concepts for components and systems, vehicle prototypes, the development of innovative components, controls and system concepts in traction and automotive technologies, and combustion engines.

The contents of the program may change. RWTH International Academy reserves the right to make changes to the organization, the staffing or the running of a program that have no major effect on the overall character of the program.

You are welcome to apply if you:

  • are at least 18 years old
  • pursue your higher education
  • completed your 1st/2nd year of studies
  • study a degree related to our program
  • are proficient in the English language

Desirable previous knowledge for this course:
Desirable is basic knowledge in the following areas: Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics, Fluids, Energy Conversion Machines, Thermodynamics, or Automotive Engineering.

We are glad to announce that we award scholarships for selected programs every year. Regarding our Summer Schools in 2022, applications will be accepted from December onwards.


Attending the Summer School was a very joyful and amazing experience. During the three weeks, not only did I learn a lot of new things, but I met many new friends who I will never forget. We also experienced the culture and beautiful sceneries of Germany. I will come back to visit Aachen again.
