Immerse yourself instead of just listening: XR workshop opens up new avenues for teaching

At the Extended Reality (XR) workshop of the Academy of Continuing Education at TH Köln, the motto was: put it on, try it out, immerse yourself. Debora Greis, Christian Beckers, and Janina Dähne from RWTH International Academy were not only able to experience the latest technologies in the field of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, but also discuss how teaching and continuing education can be completely reimagined with them.

Real movement in the virtual world

In addition to the classic VR headset, gloves, vests, and treadmills were used. The result: real movement in the virtual world — unusual at first — combined with haptic feedback and a learning experience that feels much closer to reality than any slide deck.

Together with Jenny Pomino and Ilona Arcaro from TH Köln, participants discussed the potential XR holds for universities and companies. The focus was particularly on practical application, as content can be learned, tested, and further developed in safe, immersive scenarios.

Extended Reality expands teaching and learning by adding new dimensions: content is not only conveyed but can be experienced, tested, and reflected upon through one’s own actions.

Our conclusion: hands-on learning and an inspiring glimpse into the future of professional development. Together with our partners in Cologne, we are now developing concrete application scenarios.
