Hands-on Digital Twinning with Rosario Othen from ITA - Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen

Insight into the class of the Summer School "Digitalization in Manufacturing"

On the table sits a coffee machine – not an ordinary one, but one that Rosario has upgraded technologically. In addition to the standard functions, it features a PID controller that can maintain the temperature with an accuracy of up to 0.1°C, a pump control that operates the pump for defined periods or, in combination with the retrofitted scale, stops when a defined target weight of coffee is reached.

Coffee machine as a digital model

The coffee machine is also digitally replicated, allowing the various controllable parameters to be adjusted in different ways and the brewing process to be simulated.

This enables the assessment of different process scenarios in terms of cost and energy consumption, and the process can be optimised accordingly.

Retrofitting: An example from the industry

The coffee machine serves as an illustrative example of what is possible with large machines and existing systems in industry. By so-called retrofitting – the upgrading of different components – material, energy and emission flows can be digitally recorded.

This not only supports the digitalization of industry, but also contributes to resource conservation and quality control. In this way, inefficiencies can be identified and energy consumption and CO2 emissions can be reduced by optimizing specific parameter combinations.

Practical exercises as part of the Summer School “Digitalization in Manufacturing”

In this hands-on exercise, our participants learn how companies can use digitalization strategically and profitably. Rosario, a member of the team from the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Smarte Kreisläufe, which actively promotes digitalization in small and medium-sized enterprises, brings his extensive experience to the class.

Participants learn how to collect accurate data and use it to optimize production processes, reduce emissions, and increase efficiency.
