Breaking Barriers: How Hybrid Learning Expanded Access to the AIIA Summer School
This summer, the Artificial Intelligence in Industrial Applications (AIIA) Summer School took an exciting step forward by being offered in a hybrid format for the first time. Participants could choose to join the program either on campus or online.
The goal was to make the program accessible to a broader audience, including students who may not have been able to travel due to diverse constraints. At the same time, participants gained valuable experience with digital learning environments.
Creating a Seamless Hybrid Learning Experience
To ensure that online and on-site participants could engage equally in the program, one of our teaching rooms was equipped with enhanced audio and video technology. This allowed online participants to see and hear the lecturer clearly, while those on-site could easily engage with contributions from their remote peers. The technology proved highly effective, enabling both lecturers and participants to focus fully on learning, interaction, and exchange.
The hybrid setup worked remarkably well. The technology was intuitive and reliable, allowing me to focus entirely on teaching and interacting with participants. It showed that high-quality learning experiences can be created for both on-site and online audiences at the same time.

The experience demonstrated that flexibility and quality do have to be mutually exclusive. With the right technology and approach, hybrid learning can create an engaging educational experience that brings together participants regardless of where they are located.
But the benefits go beyond flexibility. By removing geographical barriers, hybrid formats can also contribute to the internationalization of educational programs. Participants from different countries and regions can join, share perspectives, and learn from one another, creating a richer and more globally connected learning environment.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Opportunities Through Hybrid Learning
Following the positive outcomes of this year's Summer School, RWTH International Academy is exploring how similar hybrid learning formats can be integrated into future programs and adapted to different target groups.
Hybrid learning can broaden access to education while maintaining quality, combining the benefits of in-person-interaction with the flexibility of online participation and fostering international exchange.
