German Language Courses
Learning German is essential for integration into society and for pursuing internships or finding jobs in Germany after your graduation. We highly encourage all international students to learn at least basic German after arrival in Germany, or even back home before their departure for Aachen.
As an integral part of this programme, it is a requirement for students to demonstrate knowledge of German.

MME Language Programme
From intake 2019 onwards, the MME-PS curriculum includes one half-level German course at the RWTH Language Center. MME Students can attend and complete the German language course at the RWTH Language Center in any one of the four semesters of their study program.
The course level depends on the individual students’ German language knowledge.
Students with no previous German language knowledge start learning German at A1.1 level.
Students with previous German language knowledge must sit a German language placement test prior to registering for the German language course. The placement test is conducted by the RWTH Language Center. It confirms your German language level and determines which course level you can attend next.
German language certificates obtained elsewhere than at the RWTH Language Center cannot waive the placement test.
The placement test for students with previous German language knowledge is scheduled for 4 October 2019.
In order to be able to take the placement test students need to have their RWTH TIM-Id. (If you have any questions or problems concerning you TIM-Id please contact the IT Center Service Desk).
Registration and Enrolment
For intake 2019 on
Students with no German knowledge will start from A1.1 level and students with previous German language knowledge must take a placement test. Be aware, that the result of your placement test reflects the student’s entry level and not their skill level. For example, if a student finishes the placement test with an A2.1 result, their German language entry level and consequently their course level is A2.1.
After students have received their result from the placement test, they independently select a course from the semester course offerings by the RWTH Language Center. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to actively register for the German language course during the Language Center’s registration period prior to the semester of attendance!
All information about the registration process and the important semester deadlines can be found here.
