Next steps after Graduation | Joining the industry
70% of our graduates decide to pursue their career in Germany or Europe after graduating. Here are some must-know facts for you if you opt to take this path. You will not be alone! Our Student Counselors will be here for you to provide you with administrative support and our Career Coach will give you tips and advice on how to land your dream job.
The first step you should take after receiving your degree certificates is to ex-matriculate yourself from the university. Once you are ex-matriculated, you must deal with visa extensions and change their health insurance status.
If you have already received a job offer from a company, you can directly apply for a work permit at the Immigration Office (Ausländeramt Aachen).
Otherwise, you should apply for a job-seeker's residence permit, in order to look for a job in Germany. This permit can be obtained for a maximum period of 18 months. Please note that you cannot continue your education once you have been issued this permit. If you have any questions about these bureaucratic steps, our Student Councelors are pleased to guide you through the administraton process. You can find their contact information on this link.
RWTH International Academy will also be there for you throughout your career start and development. You can make an appointment with our in-house career coach anytime to practise your individual career skills. IntAc also regularly organizes seminars, networking events, or advance certificate courses to enhance your professional skills. For more information about our professional certificate courses, please visit this link.
Moreover, RWTH International Academy alumni benefit from our job offers databank. Updated job ads from our industrial partners are posted on our Facebook and LinkedIn alumni groups. Some of our industrial partners include: Amazon, Anheuser-Busch, ASML, bitstars, Creditreform, Dassault Systemes, Elgeti Engineering, Ferchau engineering, Oerlikon Barmag, P3, P&G and more! You can find the full list of our company partners here.
Next steps after Graduation | Pursuing PhD Studies
With your Master's behind you, your future is now ahead of you! If you would like to take your research interest to the next level, a popular option for our graduates is to go for doctoral studies. Having gained a strong research foundation at RWTH Aachen University, a large number of our graduates decide to pursue their passion for research as a doctoral candidate.
There is more than one way to get your doctoral title in Germany. Depending on the subject, research proposal and type of university, there are several possible paths to a PhD; the most common of which are individual doctoral studies and structured PhD programs. The majority of doctoral candidates in Germany pursue PhDs through individual doctoral study, yet structured PhD programs are becoming increasingly popular [Source: DAAD].
If you decide to pursue a career in academia, even at RWTH Aachen University, you will still have to ex-matriculate from your master's program and enroll for your PhD program separately. Also, you will have to apply for a student's residence permit and not a job seeker's residence permit. If you are not yet enrolled in a doctorate program during the application process, you will most likely be issued a temporary residence permit. Our Student Counselors and the Alumni Team will gladly help you plan your official doctoral studies, give you tips for comprehensive qualifications, and provide advice on administrative or financial support for your PhD studies.
