Subjects of the Master Program
This program focuses on all disciplines within Automotive Systems Engineering, including concept, development, design and construction and also the manufacturing process of vehicles. The knowledge obtained from ongoing research at RWTH flows directly into lectures, seminars and workshops, thus ensuring an up to date and innovative curriculum.
The program provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of Automotive Engineering. Its particular focus is on industrial R & D practices and on modern manufacturing processes of vehicles and their subsystems. The program is also meant to enhance the students’ ability to lead and coordinate project teams and to strengthen their skills of scientific documentation and communication.

Course Structure
The course work is divided into two sections (Compulsory and Elective Courses). All subjects of the “Compulsory Courses” section must be covered. A total amount of 18 hours of the per week (during lecture period) must be covered from subjects of the ”Elective Courses” section. This total amount includes lectures and exercises. Depending on the volume of the selected subjects in the “Elective Course” section, 5 subjects must be chosen. The selection of these subjects may be discussed with the program coordinator at ika.
The core compulsory courses cover the fundamentals of Automotive Engineering, and include lectures such as Systematic Engineering Design I, Automotive Engineering I / II, Internal Combustion Engines Fundamentals, Production Management I, and others.
Special courses are chosen form a catalogue of subjects, e.g. Mechatronic Systems in Automotive Engineering, Fundamentals of Lightweight Design, Manufacturing Technology I/II, Vehicle Acoustics, Welding Technology I.
An integral part of the program is the exposure each student will receive to industry-related activities. This includes a mandatory nine week industrial internship, and the opportunity to take part in applied research projects.
In addition to course work, each student will complete both a mini thesis and a master thesis on a subject related to automotive engineering. The mini thesis can be completed parallel to course work. The master thesis has a total duration of four months. Either the mini thesis or the master thesis can be completed in industry.
